Further Mathematics

Our highest performing mathematicians are invited to study for the Level 2 AQA Certificate in Further Mathematics. The course begins in the summer term of Year 10 and continues through Year 11. Students are expected to attend a one-hour lesson outside of normal school hours (currently 8:15 – 9:15am on Wednesdays) and complete a weekly homework assignment.

The course is aimed at students who are expected to achieve grades 7, 8, or 9 in GCSE Mathematics and/or are likely to progress to study A-Level Mathematics and possibly Further Mathematics.

Further Mathematics fills the gap for high-achieving students by assessing their higher order mathematical skills, particularly in algebraic reasoning, thus preparing them for study beyond GCSE. It offers the opportunity for stretch and challenge that builds on the Key Stage 4 curriculum and is an additional qualification to GCSE Mathematics. The content assumes prior knowledge of the Key Stage 4 Programme of Study and covers algebra and geometry, which are crucial to further study. There is an emphasis on technical proficiency, rigorous argument, and problem-solving skills. It also introduces calculus and matrices and develops further skills in trigonometry, functions, and graphs.
