British Values

The Department for Education states that there is a need “to create and enforce a clear and rigorous expectation on all schools to promote the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.”

The government set out its definition of British values in the 2011 Prevent Strategy, reiterated by the Prime Minister in 2014, and reinforced by DfE guidance on SMSC (November 2014). Schools should:

  • Enable students to develop self-knowledge, self-esteem, and self-confidence
  • Enable students to distinguish right from wrong and respect the civil and criminal law of England
  • Encourage students to take responsibility for their behaviour and understand how they can contribute positively to society
  • Enable students to acquire broad general knowledge of and respect for public institutions and services in England
  • Foster tolerance and harmony between different cultural traditions
  • Encourage respect for others and for democracy
Expected Understanding and Knowledge of Students
  • Understanding how citizens influence decision-making through the democratic process
  • Appreciation that living under the rule of law protects citizens and ensures safety
  • Understanding the separation of powers between the executive and judiciary
  • Understanding the freedom to choose and hold other faiths and beliefs, protected by law
  • Acceptance and tolerance of people with different faiths or beliefs
  • Understanding the importance of identifying and combating discrimination
British Values at Goldington Academy
Democracy

Everyone has a voice and the right to participate in democratic processes. Students learn about democracy through tutor time, assemblies, subject-specific lessons, and practical involvement such as the Junior Leadership Team and Pupil Voice representatives.

The Rule of Law

The importance of law in governing society is consistently reinforced. Students are taught the reasons behind rules, responsibilities, and the consequences when laws are broken. Concepts of fair play, co-operation, inclusion, and celebrating success are embedded throughout the curriculum.

Individual Liberty

Supporting the freedom of individuals to enjoy personal rights without infringing on others. Students are encouraged to make safe choices within a supportive environment, understand their rights, and exercise freedoms responsibly.

Mutual Respect and Tolerance

Goldington Academy fosters respect and tolerance towards those of different faiths, beliefs, and lifestyles. Respect, openness, and honesty are core values. Students are educated to show respect to everyone, and the school places great emphasis on celebrating cultural diversity through curriculum and pastoral work.
